Adding photos and GPX track files to your flights helps preserve memories and provides a visual record of your route. This guide will show you how to add both to your flights in FLYTELOG.

Adding Photos to a Flight

Step 1: Open the Flight

Navigate to your flights list and click on the flight you want to add photos to. This will open the flight detail page.

Step 2: Find the Photos Section

On the flight detail page, look for the Photos section. This is typically located below the flight information.

Step 3: Click "Add Photo" or "Upload Photo"

Click the button to add photos. This will open a file picker dialog.

Step 4: Select Your Photos

Choose one or more photos from your device. You can:

  • Select multiple photos at once (hold Ctrl/Cmd while clicking)
  • Upload photos in common formats (JPG, PNG, etc.)
  • Upload photos from your computer, phone, or tablet

Step 5: Wait for Upload

After selecting your photos, they will begin uploading. You'll see a progress indicator. Wait for the upload to complete.

Step 6: View Your Photos

Once uploaded, your photos will appear in the Photos section. You can click on them to view full size.

Tips for Adding Photos

  • File size: Large photos may take longer to upload. Consider resizing very large images if upload is slow
  • Multiple photos: You can add as many photos as you like to each flight
  • Delete photos: You can remove photos by clicking a delete button on the photo
  • Mobile upload: Photos taken on your phone can be uploaded directly from the mobile app

Adding GPX Data to a Flight

GPX (GPS Exchange Format) files contain track data from your flight, which FLYTELOG can use to display your route on a map and extract flight information.

Step 1: Obtain a GPX File

GPX files can come from various sources:

  • SkyDemon: Export flight as GPX
  • Garmin Pilot: Export track log as GPX
  • ForeFlight: Export track log as GPX
  • Other EFBs: Most electronic flight bags can export GPX files
  • GPS devices: Many GPS devices can export GPX track files

Step 2: Open the Flight

Navigate to the flight you want to add GPX data to and open the flight detail page.

Step 3: Find the GPX/Map Section

Look for the Map or GPX Track section on the flight detail page. This is usually near the photos section.

Step 4: Click "Upload GPX" or "Add Track"

Click the button to upload a GPX file. This will open a file picker.

Step 5: Select Your GPX File

Choose the GPX file from your device. GPX files typically have a .gpx extension.

Step 6: Wait for Processing

After uploading, FLYTELOG will process the GPX file. This may take a few moments. The system will:

  • Extract the flight track
  • Display it on a map
  • Optionally extract flight times and route information

Step 7: View Your Track

Once processed, you'll see your flight track displayed on an interactive map. You can zoom in and out to explore your route.

Alternative: Email GPX Files

You can also email GPX files directly to create flights automatically. See our guide on How to Upload Flights from SkyDemon via Email for more information.

What GPX Data Provides

When you add a GPX file to a flight, FLYTELOG can:

  • Display your route: Show your exact flight path on a map
  • Extract flight times: Automatically determine departure and arrival times
  • Identify airports: Find the nearest airports for departure and arrival
  • Calculate flight time: Determine total flight duration
  • Show altitude and speed: Display altitude and speed profiles if available in the GPX file

Managing Photos and GPX Files

Editing a Flight

You can add or remove photos and GPX files at any time by editing the flight:

  1. Open the flight
  2. Click the Edit button
  3. Add or remove photos/GPX files as needed
  4. Save your changes

Deleting Photos

To remove a photo:

  1. Open the flight
  2. Find the photo you want to delete
  3. Click the delete/trash icon on the photo
  4. Confirm the deletion

Replacing GPX Files

If you need to replace a GPX file:

  1. Open the flight
  2. Delete the existing GPX file (if there's a delete option)
  3. Upload the new GPX file

Best Practices

  • Add photos promptly: Upload photos soon after your flight while they're still on your device
  • Use descriptive filenames: If renaming GPX files, use descriptive names that include the date
  • Keep originals: Consider keeping backup copies of your photos and GPX files
  • Regular uploads: Make it a habit to add photos and GPX data after each flight

File Format Support

Photos

Supported formats include:

  • JPEG (.jpg, .jpeg)
  • PNG (.png)
  • Other common image formats

GPX Files

FLYTELOG supports standard GPX 1.1 format files. Most EFBs and GPS devices export in this format.

Troubleshooting

Photo Upload Fails

  • Check your internet connection
  • Verify the file isn't too large (try resizing if needed)
  • Ensure the file format is supported
  • Try uploading one photo at a time

GPX File Not Processing

  • Verify the file is a valid GPX format
  • Check that the file contains track data (not just waypoints)
  • Try exporting the GPX file again from your EFB
  • Contact support if the issue persists

Map Not Displaying

  • Ensure the GPX file contains valid coordinate data
  • Check that the file was processed successfully
  • Try refreshing the page
