Adding aircraft to your FLYTELOG account helps you organize and track your flights. This guide will show you how to create aircraft entries.

Important Note: You don't need to create an aircraft before logging a flight. When you log a flight with a new aircraft registration and type, FLYTELOG will automatically add it to your aircraft list. However, creating aircraft in advance can help you maintain a clean, organized list.

Step 1: Navigate to the Aircraft Section

After logging into your FLYTELOG account, click on Aircraft in the main navigation menu. This will take you to your aircraft list.

Step 2: Click "New Aircraft"

On the aircraft list page, click the New Aircraft button, typically located at the top right of the page.

Step 3: Enter Aircraft Registration

Enter the aircraft registration in the registration field. This is the official registration number (e.g., G-ABCD, N12345, EI-ABC).

Tip: Use the exact registration as it appears on the aircraft. This ensures consistency across all your flights.

Step 4: Select or Add Aircraft Type

You have two options for the aircraft type:

  • Select existing type: If you've used this aircraft type before, select it from the dropdown menu
  • Add new type: Type the aircraft type/model name (e.g., Cessna 172, Piper PA-28-181, Cirrus SR22) and it will be added to your types list

Examples of aircraft types:

  • Cessna 172
  • Piper PA-28-181
  • Cirrus SR22
  • Beechcraft Bonanza
  • Diamond DA40

Step 5: Add Additional Information (Optional)

You can optionally add:

  • Notes: Any additional information about the aircraft (e.g., "Club aircraft", "Owned", "Rented from ABC Flying Club")
  • Other details: Any other relevant information you want to track

Step 6: Save the Aircraft

Review the information you've entered, then click the Save or Create Aircraft button to add it to your list.

Viewing Your Aircraft

After creating an aircraft, you can:

  • View all flights: Click on an aircraft to see all flights logged in that aircraft
  • Edit aircraft: Update aircraft information at any time
  • See statistics: View total hours flown in each aircraft

Automatic Aircraft Creation

As mentioned, you don't need to create aircraft manually. When you log a flight:

  1. Enter the aircraft registration and type
  2. FLYTELOG automatically checks if the aircraft exists in your list
  3. If it doesn't exist, FLYTELOG creates it automatically
  4. The aircraft appears in your aircraft list

This means you can start logging flights immediately without setting up aircraft first!

Managing Your Aircraft List

Editing an Aircraft

To update aircraft information:

  1. Go to the Aircraft section
  2. Click on the aircraft you want to edit
  3. Click the Edit button
  4. Make your changes
  5. Click Save

Viewing Flights by Aircraft

To see all flights for a specific aircraft:

  1. Go to the Aircraft section
  2. Click on an aircraft
  3. You'll see a list of all flights logged in that aircraft
  4. You can filter, sort, and export these flights

Searching Aircraft

If you have many aircraft in your list:

  • Use the search function to find specific aircraft by registration or type
  • Filter by aircraft type if needed

Best Practices

  • Consistent registration format: Always use the same format (e.g., always include hyphens: G-ABCD)
  • Standardize aircraft types: Use consistent naming for aircraft types (e.g., "Cessna 172" not "C172" or "Cessna172")
  • Add notes when helpful: Use the notes field to track ownership, club membership, or other relevant details
  • Regular review: Periodically review your aircraft list to ensure accuracy

Common Questions

Do I need to create aircraft before logging flights?

No! You can log flights immediately. FLYTELOG will automatically create aircraft entries when you use them in flights.

Can I change an aircraft's registration?

Yes, you can edit aircraft information at any time, including the registration. However, be aware that this may affect how flights are grouped.

What if I make a typo in the registration?

You can edit the aircraft to correct the registration. All flights associated with that aircraft will be updated.

Can I delete an aircraft?

Yes, you can delete aircraft that have no flights associated with them. If an aircraft has flights, you may need to delete or reassign those flights first.

How do I handle aircraft with the same registration but different types?

If you've flown aircraft with the same registration but different types (rare but possible), you may want to add a note to distinguish them, or create separate entries if your system allows.
